Baton Rouge man sentenced to 20 years in prison for 2016 crime spree

A Baton Rouge man was sentenced to 20 years in a federal prison Thursday for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after his 2016 arrest during a month-long crime spree, according to acting U.S. Attorney Corey Amundson.

Derrick Shelbia, 40, pleaded guilty to the gun charge in July 2017 after he was arrested in connection with what Amundson described in a news release as a “spree of violent crimes” in Ascension Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish between October and November of 2016. Shelbia was caught in a stolen car that he took in one of the armed robbery, according to the release.

Shelbia was previously convicted of multiple armed robbery and was prohibited from having a firearm, Amundson said.

After 20 years in federal prison, Shelbia will also be required to serve a five-year term of supervised release, Amundson said.

Wagoner gets 10 years for crime spree

A Crossville-area man who led a one-man crime spree spanning more than two years and who has served 837 days in jail since his last arrest pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Criminal Court.

James Franklin Wagoner, 48, who gave a Nocatee Trace address when last arrested, agreed to a ten-year prison sentence for a series of felonies and misdemeanors that occurred in 2014 to 2016.

Part of the delay in the case was a mental competency evaluation performed at the request of the Public Defender’s Office that took several months to obtain and review. This was followed by ongoing negotiations between state prosecutors and the defender’s office.

Wagoner was facing four counts of theft of property of $1,000 to $10,000; two counts of driving under the influence; and one count each of aggravated robbery, fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, burglary, theft of property of less than $500, vandalism

Man gets four years for property crime spree

A Klamath Falls man arrested in October for numerous property crimes has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Andrew Dennis Maness, 28, pleaded guilty Jan. 17 to first-degree theft and on Wednesday was sentenced to 48 months in prison.

He was arrested Oct. 16, 2017, after allegedly entering numerous businesses during the course of multiple weeks and stealing customer and employee property. He also stole items from a local warehouse and Walmart.

When accepting the plea deal, Maness agreed to serve two years in prison after taking a week to spend time with his children. He did not report to law enforcement during this week as directed and, as a result, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Maness is currently challenging this sentence on the grounds prosecutors did not prove any enhancement factors for a longer sentence.
