Teens on crime spree accused of killing pets, setting car on fire

Two teen girls face charges after a crime spree in North Carolina where they broke into a home, killed the pets inside and set a car ablaze, officials said.

Hallie Lauren Pate, 17, and Jordan Alexis Ruiz, 18, were arrested Thursday on a dozen charges including breaking and entering, larceny and cruelty to animals in connection to a Lenoir County burglary, according to authorities.

The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said the teens allegedly broke into the home Feb. 4 and stole property. More items were taken from a car before they allegedly set the vehicle on fire.

Investigators were able to identify the suspects after they allegedly sold some of the stolen items.

Both teens were booked at Lenoir County Sheriff’s Detention Center, where they each are being held on a $50,000 bond.

They also face charges for breaking and entering a motor vehicle, burning personal property, obtaining property by false pretense and injury

Evidence of murdered Michigan teens’ alleged crime spree under review

JACKSON, MI – The Michigan Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday from attorneys fighting over whether or not a jury should be allowed to hear that two teens shot and killed in Springport were on an alleged crime spree the morning of their deaths.

Attorney George Lyons presented his argument before the court, Feb. 6, on behalf of Tracy Lawrence, who killed the two teens while they attempted to break into his truck more than two years ago.

“They were not there selling cookies, they were there to commit a felony,” Lyons said. “The jury has the right to know what brought them to that house.”

Lawrence, 54, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony in the shooting deaths of Hunter Lentz and Matthew McMillen, both 18, on June 8, 2016.

Lawrence’s trial has been on hold since prosecutors

Groups of teens using Edmonton LRT system to carry out crime spree, police say

Edmonton police issued a warning Tuesday about groups of teens using the city’s LRT system to rob people of laptops, cellphones and clothing.

Since the summer months, police have been dealing with a rash of personal robberies, thefts and mischief calls, all involving groups of young people between 13 and 18 years old.

The groups, which can number anywhere between four and 12 teens, are believed to be responsible for more than 60 crimes between August and mid-January, police said.

Personal robberies, shoplifting, thefts, disturbances and assaults linked to the teens have been reported at Belvedere, Southgate and Century Park LRT stations, at convenience and grocery stores, and the Clareview, Terwillegar and Saville recreation centres.

The incidents are seen as “crimes of opportunity,” said police, who warn LRT users to conceal their valuables, avoid walking alone and report any suspicious activity to police.
