Baton Rouge man sentenced to 20 years in prison for 2016 crime spree

A Baton Rouge man was sentenced to 20 years in a federal prison Thursday for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after his 2016 arrest during a month-long crime spree, according to acting U.S. Attorney Corey Amundson.

Derrick Shelbia, 40, pleaded guilty to the gun charge in July 2017 after he was arrested in connection with what Amundson described in a news release as a “spree of violent crimes” in Ascension Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish between October and November of 2016. Shelbia was caught in a stolen car that he took in one of the armed robbery, according to the release.

Shelbia was previously convicted of multiple armed robbery and was prohibited from having a firearm, Amundson said.

After 20 years in federal prison, Shelbia will also be required to serve a five-year term of supervised release, Amundson said.

Idaho man sentenced to prison for interstate crime spree

A northern Idaho man who authorities say engaged in a drug-fueled crime spree that crossed state lines was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports 27-year-old Steven Michael Gervasi was sentenced Tuesday after reaching a plea agreement, which reduced the charges against him to aggravated assault on a law officer, burglary, grand theft, unlawful firearm possession and methamphetamine possession.

Gervasi was charged with an assortment of crimes in Idaho and Washington after authorities say the crime spree started with a burglary, a robbery, a shooting and arson in rural Idaho in May 2016.

A Bonner County deputy then pursued Gervasi into eastern Washington. Authorities say Gervasi fired upon the deputy and escaped. He was arrested a few days later.
