Crime spree ends in 13 months’ jail

A man who distracted staff while his partner and her children left a shop with almost $1700 of stolen goods has been jailed for more than a year.

Jamie Stuart Kelly (41) appeared before the Dunedin District Court yesterday on eight charges racked up in the space of a month and a-half.

After a failed attempt to leave a supermarket with a trolley full of groceries, the defendant and his then partner Kirsty-Lee Tobin went to The Warehouse in Maclaggan St on June 30.

Kelly loaded the trolley with a 49-inch television, a duvet set and a toaster.

After a nerf gun was later added, Tobin’s two children grabbed a basketball each.

As they left the store, Kelly spoke to a staff member to divert their attention.

Tobin’s decision to involve her children in the crime was lambasted by Judge Michael Crosbie, who sentenced her last month to three months’ community detention

Crime spree: 15-year-old accused of robbing 10 Toronto banks in two months

TORONTO — A 15-year-old boy allegedly robbed 10 Toronto banks in less than two months, with a 30-year-old man accused of being his getaway driver, police said on Wednesday.

Toronto Police said the boy routinely wore a disguise — in at least one case it was a hoodie and sunglasses — and walked into banks in the city’s west end with a note to inform the teller that he had a gun and wanted money. Meantime, a 30-year-old man waited for the boy in a car outside, police said.

At 11:40 a.m. on Friday, the pair allegedly robbed a bank near St. Clair Avenue and Jane Street. An hour later, they hit a TD branch, seven kilometres away, at Lake Shore Boulevard and Mimico Avenue. The branch manager at the bank confirmed there was a robbery, but wouldn’t talk about the specifics.

Police arrived in the middle of the robbery and arrested the

Some residents in one Dallas neighborhood are on edge after multiple reported burglaries and car thefts.

The crimes are allegedly happening in at least two apartment complexes — the Hub and Locale apartments — on Hudnall Street near Lemmon Avenue and Inwood Road.

“This is where they tried to kick the door in right here. There was some damage, but they fixed that,” said Michael Miller, who lives at the Hub Apartments.

He says it was a night he’ll never forget.

“I was sleeping in my bed, and I heard a loud crash a loud, somebody kicked the door, and it rattled the frame,” he said.

Burglar gets 33 months for crime spree despite pleas for leniency

A man who went on a spree of burglaries taking over $7000 worth of items in Hawera was jailed on Monday.

A man who went on a spree of burglaries taking over $7000 worth of items in Hawera was jailed on Monday.

A spree burglar’s bid for leniency has been dismissed by a judge who told him he should not have committed the crime if he couldn’t do the time.

Since his arrest on burglary charges more than six months ago, Hura Bowman, 20, had been subject to a curfew, lawyer Nathan Bourke said.

In Hawera District Court, he urged Judge Chris Sygrove to impose a home detention sentence rather than prison when Bowman appeared for sentencing on three charges of burglary, one charge of receiving and one charge of possession of cannabis.
