Guilty plea closes the book on a romance novel model’s crime spree

Former romance novel cover model David Byers has written the final chapter of his brief and wild history as a fugitive bank robber.

On Tuesday — roughly six months after he was captured in San Diego — Byers pleaded guilty in federal court in Connecticut to a charge of robbery.

The charge stemmed from a series of April stick-ups that kept the 35-year-old running from the law for nearly two weeks, according to authorities.

Byers, of Solana Beach, appeared on the covers of four romance novels, L.A.-based photographer Michael Stokes told The Times after Byers’ capture in May.

Greenwich, Conn., of $223. The next day, he stole $8,700 from a Chase Bank, also in Greenwich, prosecutors said. He robbed the same bank again the next day, this time making off with almost $3,400.

Court briefs: Accused in crime spree pleas guilty to several charges

Christopher Drummond pled guilty at Whitecourt Provincial Court on Oct. 24 to several charges incurred for a crime spree.

He appeared via CCTV for his seventh appearance in court. Defence attorney Crystal McMahon represented him.

He pled guilty to two counts of theft under $5,000 for stealing a laptop as well as food and property from a Husky gas station. He also pled guilty to possession of stolen property. All of these alleged offences took place on the same day.

His other charges include mischief, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failure to remain at the scene, failure to comply with conditions and break and enter into a dwelling. Drummond has nine charges in total against him.

Accused fraudster gets trial rescheduled

Christopher Steffensen, who is accused of defrauding Whitecourt Minor Soccer, the local Rotary Club and Midtown Mall had his trial rescheduled on Oct. 25.

Needles man plans guilty for February crime spree

KINGMAN — A Needles man involved in a two-state crime spree pleaded guilty last week to three of the seven charges.

Adam Max Dial, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbery, vehicle theft and unlawful use of a means of transportation. He had been charged with attempted armed robbery, burglary and criminal damage. He is being held in the county jail on a $25,000 bond.

Under the plea agreement, Superior Court Judge Richard Weiss will sentence Dial to five years in state prison and Dial must pay restitution to the victims. Weiss will sentence Dial on Oct. 30.

Dial was involved in the Feb. 5 theft of a 1996 Chevrolet pickup from a Needles home. He then drove the truck to a gas station where he stole several packs of cigarettes, according to Bullhead City police.
