A new network of CCTV cameras should be put up in Oadby following crime spree – Conservative MP says

An MP has called for a new network of CCTV cameras to be put up in Oadby following a recent crime spree.

Conservative Neil O’Brien says the move is needed after a spate of around 30 burglaries on some of the town’s streets where gold and high-value cars have been stolen.

Mr O’Brien said CCTV could help the police and reassure residents who have been unnerved by the 30 or so break-ins in the area in September and October.

He said: “Harborough Council have invested in a high-definition CCTV system which covers Market Harborough and other centres, and is used by the police every day.

“I want to see a similar system developed by Oadby and Wigston to fight the burglary problem.

“I’m appalled by these burglaries, and residents and victims have told me they would like to see the council develop a powerful CCTV system to feed intelligence to the

North Vancouver man charged following Fraser Canyon crime spree

A North Vancouver man is facing multiple charges after an alleged crime spree that could have come from Grand Theft Auto Monday.

Upper Fraser Valley RCMP were called to a motel in Boston Bar after a couple reported a man robbed them and stole their vehicle. Investigators got a description of the stolen vehicle and put the word out to all detachments that patrol the Trans-Canada Highway.

An hour later, they received another dispatch, this time alerting them to an incident in Lytton, where two men caught someone in the act of trying to steal their truck. In his escape, the suspect hit one of the men with the stolen auto, police say, resulting in non-life threatening injuries.

After abandoning the vehicle, the suspect then flagged down the driver of a passing semi-truck who picked him up and promptly handed him over to a Lytton RCMP detachment member.

Gardai believe that today’s violent crime spree, during which the suspect was armed with a machine gun, began following a domestic dispute at a property in the Brookfield area of Tallaght at around 6am.

It is being investigated if the man was also involved in a physical dispute at a Tallaght property on Saturday evening prior to his violent rampage.

Local Cllr Charlie O’Connor said the ongoing dangerous situation had caused fear and upset in Tallaght and the wider community, but that gardai had handled it well.

“There was a lot of concern and upset. I had calls from schools who were aware of the situation and were concerned about letting children out, and of the threat and drama that was present,” he said.

“This was everywhere in Tallaght, but the massive presence of the gardai was a big reassurance and they did very well in the end to capture this man without any major injuries or disaster,” he added.

Man charged following crime spree

A man has been charged over a crime spree across Tatura, Kyabram and Tongala last week.

The 24-year-old Echuca man was arrested in Anderson Rd, Echuca, about 3.30am Saturday after a vehicle allegedly involved in the crimes was recognised by police.

He has been charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of theft and criminal damage, as well as evading police and unlicensed driving.

The man has been bailed to appear in Echuca Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The charges relate to a burglary at Tatura’s golf club, Hill Top, where an attempt was made to break into the pokie machines without success early Thursday.

Soon after, thousands of dollars worth of damage was then caused to a change machine at a Kyabram car wash in Allen St about 5am.
